“Fraying”

Behind the Scenes

The 3 1/2 day shoot took us all over Upstate New York to locations that would help us replicate the 12th century period.

Day 1
We shot for 5 hours at an abandoned quarry near Syracuse, NY. This time allowed us to get into the swing of things and prepare for the more complicated setups of the next day(including some fire stunts).

Day 2
We headed an hour south of Syracuse, NY to a rural dairy farm where we filmed all of our exterior scenes in the meadow. We lucked out with a beautiful sunny day and a colorful sunset as we continued filming into the night.

Day 3
Saturday we filmed a number of setpeices in the Syracuse cinematography studio, providing us with more flexibility and control with lighting. The scenes including the confessional booth scene, Henry running to the stained glass window, and some shots for a montage. All the sets were hand-built by our art department - an incredible amount of work for a few seconds on screen.

Day 4
We drove 3 hours from Syracuse to Cragsmoor, NY, where a 200 year old chapel served as our monastery location. Along with our lead, we had 3 other actors join us and used visual compositing to fill the rest of the pews. In such an old location, we tried to showcase the beautiful stonework and expansive vistas outside the church.
